National Award for Dr.
Jatinder Kaur Arora
It is a matter of pride for the Council that Dr. Jatinder Kaur
Arora, Joint Director (Biotechnology) has been conferred upon the
National Award for Women’s Development through Application of
Science & Technology for the year 2006. This award has been
instituted to recognize the contributions of individuals /
institutions who have worked at the grass root level for women’s
development through application of Science & Technology.
This prestigious award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.00 lakh, a
memento and a citation. The award was presented by the
President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the occasion of
Technology Day (11th May 2007) at New Delhi.

Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora through her innovative
approach has initiated many science & technology based
interventions for sustainable livelihood among women of rural
Punjab. She has done pioneering work for promoting value addition
through processing of medicinal & aromatic plants in Shivalik
foothills. She has promoted vermi-composting for solid waste
management in rural areas of Punjab which has helped rural women
to substantiate their earnings. Dr. Arora has also promoted
genetic literacy among rural women, specially pertaining to causes
and prevention of genetic disorders. She is now coordinating a
Govt. of India and UNIDO supported multi-institutional project for
promotion of need-based environment friendly pesticides in
Punjab. Over the last two decades, Dr. Arora has organized
numerous capacity-building programmes and sensitization workshops on
S & T applications for women.
