On February the second 1971, in the small
Iranian town of Ramsar, a convention was adopted by 18
countries to promote the conservation and wise use of the
world’s wetlands. Now, 37 years later the Ramsar Convention
has grown to include 158 countries worldwide covering 1822
sites.
Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, nodal agency
for coordination of scheme 'National Wetlands Conservation
Programme' sponsored by MEF, GoI in the state,
motivates Govt. agencies, educational institutions and NGOs to
celebrate the World Wetlands Day all over Punjab. The council
organizes special awareness programmes at wetlands sites with
activities such as lectures on conservation of wetlands,
competitions, cultural programs, farmer's camps on organic
farming, exhibitions, etc. Various eco-clubs constituted in
the schools under NGC Programme are also encouraged to
organize awareness and action oriented programmes on this Day.
The council also releases advertisement in leading dallies to
attract attention of general public in protection of wetlands.
The suggested slogan by Ramsar for World
Wetlands Day, 2009 is
"Upstream-Downstream: Wetlands connect us all",
designed around a theme of wetlands and river basin management
-- the role our wetlands play in their surrounding
environments. |
