12. Transfer of Technology from Lab to Land of Urominlick feeding to economize Livestock Productivity.

Uromin-lick is a brick shaped lick containing urea nitrogen alongwith 16 essential minerals – 8 each of major and trace elements. The nutrients present in this lick are required for maintaining health and well being of all types of ruminant animals. The three kilogram brick, nicely packed in polythene bag ensures its long shelf life. Due to slow and steady intake of nutrients through licking process, urea-N present in this brick is converted into good quality protein inside the rumen of the animal, which in turn is utilized by the host for a variety of purposes. Also the minerals present in uromin-lick are used for many body functions such as formation of bones, maintaining acid-base equilibrium, as well as part of enzyme systems for carrying out numerous biochemical reactions in the animal body. Thus it helps in maintaining good health of all types of dairy animals, as they grow well, come into heat and calve at an early date, give stable and optimum milk – so vital for economy of dairy enterprise.

The demonstrations on the technology have been conducted in various villages of Ludhiana district. The animals of these farmers were kept under Uromin-lick feeding trials under the project and its continuous feeding has successfully demonstrated the amelioration of various deficiency symptoms like late conception, more intercalving period and poor overall health. In addition, improvement in milk production by 6-8 per cent has also been demonstrated. Due to its long shelf life and easy transportation, the Uromin-lick can serve as the best scarcity/famine ration. Ten Uromin-lick making machines (2 brick capacity each) have been distributed to farmers/unemployed youths free of cost under the project. The Principal Investigator was Dr. G.S. Makkar, Senior Animal Nutritionist, Department of Animal Nutrition and Forages, PAU, Ludhiana.
