13. Evaluation of the Usefulness of Transrectal Ultrasound - the Diagnosis & Management  of Carcinoma of the Prostate.

Transrectal Ultrasound is a new approach for the diagnosis and management of carcinoma of the prostate. Under the study, two groups of patients including those suspicious and non-suspicious for cancer were subjected to transrectal ultrasound in order to determine the specificity and sensitivity of this technique as a diagnostic tool in detecting prostrate cancer. The project findings have revealed that it may not be advisible to recommend transrectal ultrasonography for routine screening of the patients for prostate cancer and hence the future work in this area may be focused more on techniques like prostate specific antigen (PSA) estimation etc.

The salient project findings have been sent to Director, Research and Medical Education, Punjab; Director, Health & Family Welfare, Punjab; ICMR and DBT etc. for further use at their end and also for dissemination of the same among institutes working in the relevant area. The Principal Investigator was Dr. Sudha Katariya, Additional Professor, Department of Radio Diagnosis & Imaging, PGIMER, Chandigarh.
