The Council had signed a MOU with CH2M HILL Canada and M/s Spatial Decisions, New Delhi on 25th April, 2002 at New Delhi for implementation of project “Assessment of wetland technology as a community wastewater treatment system” at two sites in Punjab. The objective of this project was to evaluate the practicality and methodologies of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment in communities in India. Two sites selected for this project were village Pipal Majra in District Ropar and village Shekhupur in District Patiala. The technical support for the project was given by Canadian consultant CH2M HILL. The Council managed local project execution and assisted with report preparation, workshop facilitation and overall community consultations. The project also included environmental and social Impact studies in the two villages before start of construction at the two sites. The project also included submission of six task reports to CIDA Inc. namely Inception Report, Technical Feasibility Assessment, Social Impact Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Final Report and Final Activity Report.
The project at village Pipal Majra (pond size : 1.5 acres) was executed by Gram Panchayat whereas the work at village Shekhupur (pond size : 2.5 acres) was executed by the Council through M/s Spatial Decisions – partner in this project involving an expenditure of Rs. 4.65 lakhs and 3.64 lakhs, respectively. The drawings of the project sites were worked out by CH2M HILL Canada in consultation with the Council. The projects at both the sites have now been commissioned.
