3. Projects on Biotechnology education with UNESCO.

The close proximity of developments in biological sciences to industrial applications has necessitated that teaching instructions be made more livable and interactive right from the school level. Therefore, as follow up of the World Conference on Science, Budapest (1999) and with a view to reinforce science and technology education content at the secondary school level for developing countries. UNESCO had awarded following projects to the Council :-

  1. Module on “Food & Biotechnology” for UNESCO.
An activity based educational module on “Food and Biotechnology” was developed by council for UNESCO for use by secondary schools teachers of developing countries. The module covered information on biotechnological interventions in various aspects related to food including production and processing, quality control, management of food waste and 7 practical activities.
  2. Multimedia CD on “Biotechnology Educational Modules”
This software has been developed to enable the students to extrapolate their basic knowledge in Biology and understand the practical applications of biotechnology. In order to facilitate comprehension, the contents have been categorized into two broad sections viz. ‘Essentials’ and ‘Applications’. Keeping in view the lasting impact of ‘hands-on’ experience, eleven practical ‘activities have also been included. These have been designed in a way that they can be modified depending upon the available resources. A comprehensive glossary of technical terms has also been included under ‘Explore’ section. Besides, in order to provide complete flexibility in information handling, the CD has been made totally interactive, generously interspersed with illustrations and supported by voice narration.

UNESCO has appreciated the work done by the council for preparation of these modules, which are being used as educational resource material in developing countries.
