4. Popular Biotechnology Lecture Series.
Modern biology is a multidisciplinary subject
today. The education in this field thus requires a much broader
understanding of emerging areas of life sciences as well as their
grass root and advanced applications. In this context, the
Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India’s programme titled
‘Popular Biotechnology Lectures’ aims at creating awareness on the
basic concepts and recent advances of biotechnology and its
applications among students and teachers of schools, colleges,
universities as well as general public. Under this programme, a
series comprising three popular biotechnology lectures is
organized every year by Punjab State Council for Science &
Technology. The Council organized 12th Popular Biotechnology
Lecture Series this year on 28.3.06 at D.C. Model International
Senior Secondary School, Ferozepur. More than 150 students and
teachers of various schools, colleges, and other educational
Institutions participated in the programme.
The lecture series covered popular lectures on
“Biotechnology Applications in Post Harvest Technology” by Dr.
Maninder Arora, Food Microbiologist, Department of Processing & Food
Engineering, College of Agricultural Engineering, Punjab
Agricultural University, Ludhiana; “Grass root applications of
Biotechnology – Apiculture & value addition through Honey
Processing” by Dr. Madhu Gill, Chairperson, North India Beekeepers
Association, Chandigarh and “Quality Management in food industry” by
Dr. Ajit Dua, Senior Scientific Officer
(Biotechnology), PSCST.
