2.5. RE-ROLLING MILLS

AIR POLLUTION CONTROL & ENERGY CONSERVATION IN RE-ROLLING MILLS

A technology for controlling air pollution from pulverized coal fired re-rolling mills  has been developed.

SALIENT FEATURES OF COUNCIL’S TECHNOLOGY

  • Use of low ash coal having ash content less than 10 %.

  • Optimum feeding, firing and operating practices .

  • Use of aerodynamically well designed and balanced ID fan

  • Installation of high efficiency cyclone followed by self induced scrubber either with spray or without spray.
    1.   A high efficiency cyclone based on computer aided design having in volute entry at the top in place of tangential entry was provided so as to reduce the pressure drop.
    2.   An impingement type stainless steel scrubber was provided after cyclone so as entrap the remaining superfine fine dust emissions from the flue gas and to bring down the emission levels below prescribed standards.

    • Proper workmanship/fabrication and installation of various components of APCD.

    • Efficiency of the pollution control system is more than 90 %.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has approved this technology.

    BENEFITS ACHIEVED

    Social Gains

    • 25-50 kg of dust is getting entrapped daily in the APCD of an individual unit based on production capacity.  After the replication of this technology in all the 250 rolling mills in Mandi Gobindgarh/Khanna, around 6-8 T of dust per day would be entrapped in the APCDs thereby saving the environment in great deal from degradation.

    • Earlier due to ineffective suction by local made ID fans, the smoke was seen bulging out from the furnace doors thereby affecting the worker’s health. With the adoption of council’s technology, there has been no smoke from furnace doors due to effective suction resulting in improved working conditions vis-à-vis enhanced productivity.

    Economic gains

With the adoption of this technology, there has been uniform heating of the product resulting in

    1. Increased output
    2. Improved quality of the product.
    3. Reduction in thermal & electrical energy consumption.

    INITIATIVES AHEAD FOR ROLLING MILLS

Based on council’s experience in rolling mills, council foresee to work in following areas:

    1. Improvement in the design of coal pulverizing system , conveying system and combustion system so as to reduce the scale losses.
    2. Improvement in the design of furnaces.
    3. Demonstration of instrumentation in the furnace.
    4. Demonstration of energy conservation measures for the reduction of thermal as well electrical energy consumption.
