2001-2002 Integrating Environment Issues in Science Education
Sub-regional Workshop on "Infusing Environmental Issues in Science Education" for South Asian Countries
A UNESCO sponsored sub-regional workshop for "Infusing Environmental Issues in Science Education" was organised from 16-20 April 2001 at Chandigarh to help science educators/curriculum developers introduce local environmental issues into science education in order to create a sense of relationship in the minds of students between this specific environment and the science they learn in the class room. Twenty seven participants from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, besides senior officers from UNDP, Wetland International, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Deptt. of Science & Technology, Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, CPR Centre for Environment Education, Chennai, WWF, NCERT, National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, State Institute of Science Education, Punjab, Punjab School Education Board, State Institute of Education, UT, etc. attended. New approaches to science education through use of environment and identification of suitable techniques were discussed.
A workshop report has been prepared and a book ‘Greening Science Education’ has been published.’ Additional copies of the book have also been prepared on popular demand. Back
